I'm no Human anymore

Stage One – The Original Ken

There’s not too much revealed about the original Ken at first – we don’t get to see much of him.

Still, he wasn’t exactly an ordinary teenager. He lost his father early on, and the only thing left behind were the books his father had collected. Heavy, demanding literature – but through them, Ken developed a deep love for reading.

That love wasn't just a hobby. It was a place of refuge. While others in school talked, laughed, and lived, Ken was often alone – surrounded by words that understood him better than any person could.

After his father’s death, Ken lived alone with his mother – a woman who loved her son more than anything. She loved him so much that she worked herself to death just to give him a good life.

All of this leads us to the Ken we briefly meet at the start of the series: a kind, introverted bookworm with Hide as his only and best friend. He’s not exactly the bravest. But when the girl he’s been watching at Café Antique finally agrees to go out with him and tells him she’s scared because of the Ghoul incidents, he walks her home.

But then something happens that would change his life forever.

Stage Two – Who am I?

Strictly speaking, this title isn’t fully accurate – Ken doesn’t truly know who he is, or wants to be, until the final season Tokyo Ghoul:Re. But since this is the first time he starts asking that question, I think it fits.

In the Hospital

His new “self” begins to take shape after his date with Rize, when he lies in the hospital and hears the doctors talking while in a coma – they’ve given him Rize’s organs.

The first change he notices is that the hospital food no longer tastes good to him. But he doesn’t give it much thought.

What shakes him far more is when the nurse tells him that Hide has visited again. That’s when Ken realizes: Hide is always there for him. No questions asked. No hesitation. The only one.

The Realization

When Ken is finally discharged, he quietly hopes everything that happened was just a bad dream. That Rize, the blood, the pain – were all just a nightmare. But with every step, he feels it more and more: something is different. Inside him. Around him. He feels foreign in his own skin.

When he gets home, he finds a grocery bag with a note from Hide. Just left there. No big gesture. Just a quiet act of care that hits Ken right in the heart.

He thanks him silently – and at the same time, apologizes. For everything Hide does for him. For the daily hospital visits, even when Ken wasn’t conscious. For buying his beloved hamburger steaks without ever being asked. And me? I have nothing to give him... – Ken thinks. Quietly. Tired.

Later, he sits on his bed, gloomy, while the TV plays in the background. A talk show – a Ghoul researcher is speaking. At first, Ken hardly listens… But then the question comes up: Can Ghouls eat regular food? Suddenly, he’s all ears. He remembers Rize. And when the researcher explains that human food tastes spoiled to Ghouls, Ken's whole body tenses. Panic creeps in – quietly, but unstoppable.

He frantically searches his kitchen for something, anything, that might still taste good. His first bites of a burger are hesitant – out of fear of the truth. Then a sandwich, milk, mustard, even ketchup – he shoves it all into his mouth, desperate to find something familiar. But he breaks down when he realizes: Nothing tastes like it used to. Then, a small flicker of hope – Hide’s hamburger steak falls to the floor in front of him.

Ken on the floor. This is my favorite food... and Hide made it just for me. Prepared the way he knows I like it. But with the first bite, a tear falls. This can’t be real...

The Awakening

When Ken still doesn’t return to university, Hide leaves him a message. Ken’s favorite author, Sen Takatsuki, is doing a book signing. Ken clings to this little bit of hope – maybe, just maybe, something might still feel right. Sen Takatsuki is the one constant in his life that hasn’t changed.

But when he arrives at the bookstore, the event is already over. And the way he reacts shows just how much it hits him – even this small comfort is gone. On his way home, he suddenly stops. A scent draws him in. The scent of human flesh.

Realizing his craving, he rushes home to look at himself in the mirror. And there, he sees it for the first time – his Ghoul eye.

He questions what’s happening. And then he sees it –Rize’s phantom in his reflection. In that moment, everything collapses. The truth hits him like a thunderclap. Because of the organs he received from Rize… he has become a Ghoul.

In a moment of desperation, he tries to cut the organs out of himself – but the knife breaks. And he collapses to the floor...
